International Women’s Day is not simply a hashtag, it’s a date that commemorates the movement for women’s rights as well as celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women. This is a thought not lost on us at SA Beer Magazine. Indeed, we would not have gotten where we are now without vital contributions from several women.
In our first year (the zine days!) a different local female artist illustrated each one of our four inaugural year covers. We’re forever indebted to Regina Morales for Issue 1, Alicia Spence-Schlesinger for Issue 2, Dominique Pèré for Issue 3, and Shelby Criswell for Issue 4. Together, their talents directly influenced our identity as we got the magazine off the ground. And that’s without mentioning that Dominique served as layout designer for our first three issues! We invite you to visit our Issues page to review their artwork.
We also want to acknowledge and thank three more talented women who have been working with us on a regular basis and ensuring that our magazine’s pages look great and are filled with engaging content. Alexandria Rutledge has helped transition our printed product from a zine into a magazine by taking over layout design since Issue 4. And Collette Orquiz and Jennifer Alejos (two local writers and passionate beer fans) have contributed numerous articles to both the zine and the magazine. They have been our most steady and long-standing contributors.
We cannot thank all of you ladies enough for everything you have done to help further this passion project, and we look forward to what we can all accomplish together in 2018 and beyond. In celebration of this important day, we’ll be at The Hoppy Monk for their International Women’s Day event. Starting with live music at 6pm, the event will feature women from the local beer community and the businesses they have worked to create and sustain. Partial proceeds from the event will be donated to Girl Rising, a nonprofit that works globally to ensure girls are educated and empowered. Please visit their site for more information.
One more shoutout: thank you to the ladies from Girls Pint Out for providing this original pint glass for an Issue 5 photo shoot and feature. It’s truly a collector piece. Hope to see y’all out tonight!
